A loudspeaker system has first and second loudspeaker assemblies, for example a powered, subwoofer assembly, and a passive subassembly. A mechanical and electrical connection is provided between the two subassemblies. This enables an end user to select different pairs of subassemblies, for matching and use together. To ensure accurate matching between the two assemblies, a filter circuit can be provided in the first subassembly, to filter the signal to the low frequency or subwoofer speaker, to give accurate matching with the known characteristics of passive speakers in the second subassembly. The first subassembly can include a switch to enable switching between different modes, corresponding to different second subassemblies.
