LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM WITH BOUNDARY LAYER CONTROL ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A loudspeaker system is provided, where the construction comprises a cabinet 12 that has two drivers 14,16 mounted in the front face 18 thereof, controlled by an electronic crossover network 42. The front face of the cabinet slopes upwardly and rearwardly from bottom, 20 to top 22, generally at an angle of about 20 degrees to the vertical; it is recessed from the forward extension of the sides, top and bottom, and is covered except over the drivers, with a compressed fibrous, sound absorbing material 24. The material is compressed by the grill cloth 32 which is stretched at least across the front of the speaker. The compressed fibrous, sound absorbing material attenuates surface waves that are propagated outwardly from each of the woofer and tweeter parallel to or at a shallow angle to the front face of the cabinet, and any reflections from cabinet corners or the like are even further attenuated. Because of the sloped front face, the crossover network may be designed having constant group delay time differences over the first one or two octaves on each side of the crossover frequency, so that there is better phase response and minimal interaction between the drivers.
