ABSTRACT An improved hydrogen sulfide service, cryogenic steel is disclosed comprising carbon, manganese, phosphor- ous, sulphur, silicon, chromium, molybdenum with the balance iron having not-more than approximately 1% incidental steel-making residual elements, said steel having been heat treated and water quenched to develop a 50% tempered martensite micro-structure at the centre of the thickest section thereof. The disclosed steel is a low alloy, cryogenic steel suitable for hydrogen sulfide service and particularly suitable for arctic service in the petroleum industry. The present invention exhibits a high minimal hardenability which enables it to undergo a severe quench thus producing a micro-structure which exhibits high toughness and improved impact load resistance.
