A low carbon monoxide fire log includes an impingement surface fabricated from a low density refractory material. The low density impingement surface does not cool the impingement flame when the impingement flame is impinged on the surface. The hotter flame results in complete combustion and less carbon monoxide. The low density impingement surface may be a refractory fiber blanket material, a refractory fiber cloth material, or a low density particulate material. The low carbon monoxide log allows a log set to be fabricated in a single piece because the low carbon monoxide levels increase the manufacturing tolerance.
