An airway adapter (50, 150, 300, 400, 500) suitable for use with patients having low tidal volumes, e.g., neonates, which minimizes deadspace in the airway and promotes smooth flow of gases through the adapter. The adapter includes a first portion (54, 154, 304, 404, 504) adapted to couple to a tubular adapter, such as an endotracheal tube adapter, and a second portion adapted to couple to a ventilation tube. A longitudinally compressible member is coupled to the first portion to minimize deadspace in the adapter. A portion of the compressible member resiliently contacts and seals against a tubular adapter upon assembly of the airway adapter therewith.

L'invention concerne un adaptateur pour voies respiratoires (50, 150, 300, 400, 500) qui convient aux patients présentant des volumes respiratoires faibles, par exemple des nouveaux nés, et qui permet de minimiser l'espace mort dans les voies respiratoires et favorise l'écoulement facile de gaz à travers l'adaptateur. Cet adaptateur comprend une première partie (54, 154, 304, 404, 504) conçue de manière à être reliée à un adaptateur tubulaire, tel un adaptateur pour le tube endotrachéal, et une deuxième partie conçue pour être reliée à un tube de ventilation. Un élément compressible dans le sens longitudinal est relié à la première partie afin de minimiser l'espace mort dans l'adaptateur.
