A process for the preparation of a low density, substantially water-insoluble, particulate material which comprises forming an aqueous slurry containing precipitated calcium carbonate and optionally a dissolved alkali metal polyphosphate, and treating said slurry to heating and mechanical processing steps to provide a particulate material having a particle size of -50 to +170 mesh (U.S. Standard Sieve), and a particle density of no more than 1.0 g/ml. and a resistance against breakdown in water; and a low density, substantially water-insoluble, calcium carbonate containing, particulate material prepared by such process.

Procédé pour préparer une matière particulaire, de faible masse spécifique et insoluble dans l'eau, consistant à former une suspension aqueuse épaisse, renfermant du carbonate de calcium précipité et, facultativement, un polyphosphate de métal alcalin dissous, à traiter ladite suspension par chauffage et par des opérations mécaniques pour obtenir une matière particulaire de -50 à +170 mailles (U.S. Standard Sieve), avec une densité particulaire ne dépassant pas 1,0 g/ml, et résistant à la décomposition dans l'eau; matière particulaire renfermant du carbonate de calcium, de faible masse spécifique et pratiquement insoluble dans l'eau, préparée grâce à ce procédé.
