ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bin sorter for lumber comprising a plurality of bins to receive the lumber. A feed conveyor brings lumber to the conveyor and the lumber is distributed to different bins, depending on predetermined lumber characteristics. There are bin bottoms for each bin for the lumber movable in tracks up and down the bin. The sorted lumber feeds from the bottom of the bin. Each bin bottom can move downwardly as each bin load increases and can be raised to the top on unloading of the bin. The bin bottom is of low profile so that it may be raised close to the top of the bin and thus close to the feed conveyor, so that the lumber falling onto the bin from the feed conveyor falls only a short distance. An arm is pivotally mounted at the bottom of the tracks and arranged to be pivoted downwardly by a bin bottom moving downwardly to contact the arm. The arm acts as a gate to contain lumber in the bin but below the end of the guide member as lumber is unloaded, by bridging the gap between the lower end of the bin and the bin bottom at its lowermost position. The arm is urged to the raised position when the bin bottom is raised. The bin provides for low lumber drop.
