ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A process for the recovery of copper from copper bearing materials which comprises leaching the copper bearing materials with ammoniacal solutions to produce a leach solution containing copper tetra-ammine sul- phate, converting the copper tetra-ammine sulphate to a substantially ammonia free copper sulphite, dissolving the substantially ammonia free copper sulphite in a solution of copper II sulphate water and an organic nitrile comprising acetonitrile, and disproportionating the solution to precipitate copper powder.
