LOW LOSS CLADDED OPTICAL FIBERS FROM HALIDES AND PROCESS FOR MAKING SAME Abstract Of The Disclosure A low loss cladded halide fiber for transmission of infrared energy is provided, and a process for making same, A single crystal ingot is grown from a powder of the core halide. The ingot is machined or extruded to provide a cylindrical billet core. A sleeve member of a second halide of lower refractive index is prepared in the same fashion and is coaxially core drilled to accept the billet core. The assembled composite billet is covered with a polymer film. The film-covered billet is heated and extruded to form a polymer coated fiber in the range of 75 to 2,000 microns in diameter. The extruded fiber may be rapidly cooled as it leaves the extrusion die to minimize grain size in scattering loss. The resulting fiber, suitable for surgical and industrial use, is protected from deterioration by the atmosphere. In another embodiment of the fiber, a second polymer film is coaxially interposed between the billet core and cladding. For applications of the infrared cladded optical fiber, a cable is provided formed from a length of the fiber contained in a coaxial outer strength member.
