ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to alkali or ammonium salts of humic acids having a low molecular weight; they are referred to as alkali huminates. They are obtained by suspending humin substance-containing products in alkaline or ammoniacal aqueous solution by separating the suspension aqueous solution thus formed from coarse solids and freeing finest solids and high molecular huminates by means of centrifuging. The solution thus obtained is neutralized and buffered at a pH value ranging from 6.2 to 7.2 and is once more purified by centrifuging and a low molecular fraction is separated from this solution.
