A catalytic heater (10) has an insulation pad (36) and a catalyst pad (34) mounted in face-to-face relation within an enclosure (11) having an open front face (20). A starter (48) is mounted within the catalyst pad and is effective for preheating of the catalyst pad. Fuel gas is supplied to the rear face of the insulation pad and air is supplied to the front face of the catalyst pad, so that a catalytic reaction occurs generally when the catalyst pad is preheated to the activity temperature for catalytic reaction. After the catalytic reaction begins, electrical energy is ceased to the starter. The starter preferably comprises a quartz-halogen lamp of a relatively small size which is mounted within the catalyst pad.

Un appareil de chauffage à catalyse (10) comporte une plaque isolante (36) et une plaque catalysante (34) montées en relation face à face à l'intérieur d'une enceinte (11) ayant une face avant ouverte (20). Un démarreur (48) est monté à l'intérieur de la plaque catalysante et est efficace pour le préchauffage de la plaque catalysante. Le gaz combustible est distribué à la face arrière de la plaque isolante et de l'air est distribué à la face avant de la plaque catalysante, de sorte qu'une réaction catalytique se produit généralement lorsque la plaque catalysante est préchauffée à la température d'activité pour une réaction catalytique. Une fois que la réaction catalytique commence, de l'énergie électrique est interrompue au démarreur.
