ABSTRACT: A low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp having a lamp envelope which encloses a folded tubular discharge vessel, the discharge vessel being provided with an appendix which is kept at a relatively low temperature by a heat shield located within the lamp envelope. The heat shield shields the outer wall sur- face of the appendix from the outer wall of the discharge vessel. The cooler appendix serves to main- tain the mercury vapour pressure at an optimum value during operation of the lamp. No additional measures are required in order to control the mercury vapour pressure in the discharge vessel.
