An electrochemical cell is disclosed having a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), a first cell separator plate, a second cell separator plate, and a carbon layer with integrated flowchannels. The MEA includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and a membrane disposed between and in fluid communication with the first and second electrodes. The first cell separator plate is disposed on the first electrode side of the MEA and defines a first flow field therebetween, the first flow field being proximate a first frame member. The second cell separator plate is disposed on the second electrode side of the MEA and defines a second flow field therebetween, the second flow field being proximate a second frame member. The carbon layer with integrated flowchannels is disposed at the first flow field, the flowchannels having a flow width that is equal to or less than the width of the webbing between adjacent flowchannels.

L~invention porte sur une cellule électrochimique ayant un ensemble d~électrodes à membrane (MEA), une première plaque de séparation cellulaire, une seconde plaque de séparation cellulaire et une couche de carbone avec des canaux d~écoulement intégrés. Le MEA comporte une première électrode, une seconde électrode et une membrane disposée entre la première électrode et la seconde électrode et en communication fluide avec celles-ci. La première plaque de séparation cellulaire est disposée sur le côté de la première électrode du MEA et définit un premier champ d~écoulement entre eux, le premier champ d~écoulement étant proche d~un premier élément support. La seconde plaque de séparation cellulaire est disposée sur le côté de la seconde électrode du MEA et définit un second champ d~écoulement entre eux, le second champ d~écoulement étant proche d~un second élément support. La couche de carbone avec des canaux d~écoulement intégrés est disposée au niveau du premier champ d~écoulement, les canaux d~écoulement ayant une largeur d~écoulement inférieure ou égale à la largeur de la trame entre des canaux d~écoulement adjacents.
