A railroad switch machine gear box (210) having a low vertical profiled is provided, wherein a compound gear (290) rotatably mounted within a housing (212) along a first vertical axis (292) cooperatively engages an adjacent main crank gear (300). A bevel gear (255) fixedly mounted to a hand throw shaft (240) rotatably mounted within the housing (212) along a first horizontal axis cooperatively engages the compound gear (290), thereby to rotate the compound gear (290) and the main crank gear (300) when the hand throw shaft (240) is rotated. A motor/manual mode selector lever (245) is affixed to an eccentric shaft (250) positioned to be rotated about a horizontal axis that is parallel to the pivot axis of a clutch yoke (265) that is connected to be pivoted by the eccentric shaft (250). The clutch yoke (265) is positioned to move a clutch assembly (310) either upwardly or downwardly for selectively engaging or disengaging the main crank gear (300). A proximity sensing device (270) is provided for detecting the position of the clutch yoke (265).

Un couple conique (255) solidaire d'un levier à commande manuelle (240) et monté rotatif dans le carter (212) selon un premier axe vertical, engrène dans le pignon composé (290) avec lequel il coopère, ce qui fait tourner ledit pignon (290) et la roue dentée principale (300) lorsque l'on tourne le levier (240). Un levier sélecteur à moteur/commande manuelle (245) est fixé sur un arbre excentrique (250) disposé de manière à tourner sur un axe horizontal parallèle à l'axe de pivotement de l'étrier d'embrayage (265) qui est relié pivotant à l'arbre excentrique (250). L'étrier d'embrayage est disposé de manière soit à soulever, soit à abaisser l'ensemble embrayage (310) pour, ce faisant, engager ou désengager la roue dentée principale (300). Un dispositif de capteur de proximité (270) permet de détecter la position de l'étrier d'embrayage.
