A workpiece clamping apparatus for a sliding compound miter saw or other device is provided which has a low profile such that it does not interfere with the movement of the saw blade. The apparatus includes an attachment member for adjustably attaching the clamping apparatus to a table portion such that the vertical distance between the table portion and the clamping apparatus may be varied. A clamp body is slidably attached to the attachment member such that it may be moved vertically to a desired location and then locked into position by a locking mechanism. At the opposite end of the clamp body, a cam and plunger are provided to exert a downward force on a workpiece. A circular pad connected to the plunger is provided to contact the workpiece. The pad is movable in the vertical direction so that it may be taken into and out of contact with the workpiece. The cam is designed such that rotation of a lever attached to the cam from a vertical position to a horizontal position exerts a downward force on the plunger and the pad moves to contact the workpiece to hold a workpiece firmly against the table portion. The rotation of the cam always exerts the same amount of force on the plunger and, thus, the pad always exerts the same amount of force on the workpiece. The plunger is biased so that when the cam lever is placed in the vertical position, the plunger moves upward, freeing the workpiece.
