ABSTRACT A scotch yoke compressor including a valve system wherein an annular discharge port is defined by an opening in the valve plate and a washer attached to the cylinder head. A valved piston includes a valve retainer having an annular protuberance that extends above the piston head and is received within the annular discharge port when the piston is at top dead center, thereby reducing reexpansion volume.
