The invention provides a low stress optical waveguide assembly wherein one or more waveguide cores have a conformal cladding in register the waveguide core. The core and cladding are preferably lithographically formed on a substrate. A connector assembly provides for the precision interconnection of mating arrays of parallel optical waveguides. The connector assembly has a base with several parallel channel walls cut along a surface of the base. A waveguide assembly is positioned on the base. The waveguide assembly comprises a substrate and one or more transparent, polymeric waveguides on and raised from a surface of the substrate. A conformal cladding is in register with the waveguide core. Such conformal cladding contributes to a reduction in waveguide stress. The waveguide assembly is positioned on the base such that each of the waveguides is set in one of the channels and contacts the walls of the channel. A cover plate holds the waveguide assembly on the base.

Cette invention concerne un ensemble guide d'onde optique à faible contrainte dans lequel un ou plusieurs coeurs de guides d'onde comportent une gaine conforme qui est alignée sur le coeur du guide d'onde. Le coeur et la gaine sont de préférence formés par photolithographie sur un substrat. Un ensemble connecteur assure l'interconnexion de précision de groupes appariés de guides d'onde optiques parallèles. L'ensemble connecteur comprend une base comportant plusieurs parois de rainures parallèles découpées le long d'une surface de la base. Un ensemble guide d'onde est placé sur la base. L'ensemble guide d'onde comprend un substrat et un ou plusieurs guides d'ondes polymères transparents qui sont situés sur la surface du substrat et qui s'élèvent verticalement depuis cette surface. Une gaine conforme est alignée sur le coeur du guide d'onde, cette gaine contribue à réduire la contrainte du guide d'onde. L'ensemble guide d'onde est placé sur la base de sorte que chacun des guides d'ondes se place dans une des rainures et se trouve en contact avec les parois de la rainure. Une plaque de dessus maintient l'ensemble guide d'onde sur la base.
