A low swage load fastening system is provided for installing swage--type fasteners to secure a plurality of workpieces together. The fastener includes a pin member having an elongated pin shank to be located in aligned openings in the workpieces. An enlarged head at one end of the pin engages one side of the workpieces. A grooved pin portion extends past an opposite side of the workpieces. A collar includes a shank portion adapted to be swaged into the pin lock grooves in response, to a relative axial swage load applied by an installation tool. As one aspect of the system, the collar is as-headed and does not require thermal processing yet provides an optimum balance of reduced collar shank wall thickness and increased hardness, whereby the swage load is minimized. A low swage load thread form for the lock grooves of the pin is also provided, a reduced diameter, relatively short pull portion pin extension, installation tool improvements, and an associated method of use are also disclosed.
L'invention concerne un sytème de fixation à faible charge matricielle permettant d'installer des pièces de fixation de type embouti pour fixer ensemble une pluralité de pièces de travail. La pièce de fixation comprend une goupille dotée d'une tige oblongue à placer dans les ouvertures alignées dans les pièces de travail. Une tête élargie à une extrémité de la goupille entre en prise avec un côté des pièces de travail. Une partie rainurée de la goupille fait saillie du côté opposé des pièces de travail. Un col comprend une partie tige conçue pour être emboutie dans les rainures de verrouillage de la goupille en réponse à une charge matricielle axiale relative appliquée par un outil d'installation. Dans un aspect du système, le col est abouté et n'exige pas un traitement thermique, mais présente un équilibre optimal entre l'épaisseur réduite de la paroi de la tige du col et sa dureté accrue, d'où une charge matricielle minimisée. On prévoit également une forme de filetage à faible charge matricielle pour les rainures de verrouillage de la goupille, un diamètre réduit, une extension relativement courte de la goupille, un outil d'installation amélioré et une méthode d'utilisation connexe.
