ABSTRACT Ammonia is oxidized easily at lower temperatures over platinum containing gauzes bearing a platinum coating having a surface area in excess of about 50 cm2/g. These gauzes may be heated to a temperature which is sufficient to initiate ammonia oxidation by passing hydrogen in air over these gauzes at temperatures below 75°C, most preferably at temperatures of less than 50°C.
