Coating compositions based on nonlinear, low molecular weight, polyester-based polyols having low viscosity and high solids content made by reacting a branched, polyhydric alcohol having at least three hydroxyl groups, such as trimethylolpropane; a glycol or diol; and a compound selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid, C1-C6 alkyl ester, anhydride, diacid halide, or mixtures thereof. The nonlinear, polyester-based polyols are quite effective in maintaining a high solids content while lowering viscosity when blended with other coating resins, such as acrylic resins, making the coating resins more effective in cured coatings by improving flexibility, impact resistance and hardness without adversely affecting appearance, solvent resistance, and/or accelerated weathering. This invention also relates to the process of coating a substrate with these coating compositions.
La présente invention concerne des compositions à partir de polyols à base de polyester non linéaire à faible masse moléculaire, présentant une faible viscosité et une teneur élevée en solides. On obtient de telles compositions en faisant réagir entre eux, d'une part un alcool polyhydrique ramifié portant au moins 3 groupes hydroxyle tel que le triméthylolpropane, d'autre part un glycol ou un diol, et enfin un composé appartenant à un groupe constitué d'un acide dicarboxylique aliphatique ou aromatique, un alkyle-ester en C¿1?-C¿6?, un anhydride, une halogénure diacide, ou certains de leurs mélanges. Ces polyols non linéaires à base de polyester répondent particulièrement bien aux besoins lorsqu'on doit conserver une teneur élevée en solide tout en abaissant la viscosité en cas de mélange avec d'autres résines de revêtement telles que les résines acryliques, ce qui rend les résines de revêtement plus efficaces dans le cas des revêtements durcis, du fait de l'amélioration, non seulement de la flexibilité, mais aussi de la résistance aux chocs et de la dureté, et ce, sans remettre en cause l'esthétique, la résistance au solvant et/ou le vieillissement aux intempéries. L'invention concerne également le procédé d'enduction d'un substrat avec ces compositions de revêtement.
