A lube base oil which comprises at least one hydrocarbon compound having as the basic skeleton a structure represented by any of the general formulae (I) to (VI) and has a viscosity at -40~C of 40 Pa.cndot.s or lower and a viscosity index of 80 or higher, (wherein p is an integer of 1 to 10, provided that in the formulae (I) and (II), p is not 1). It satisfies the coefficient of high- temperature traction, low-temperature flowability, and viscosity index on a high level.

Huile de base lubrifiante qui contient au moins un composé hydrocarbure possédant comme squelette de base une structure représentée par l'une quelconque des formules générales (I) à (IV) et qui possède une viscosité à -40 ·C de 40 Pa?.¿s ou moins et un indice de viscosité de 80 ou plus. Dans lesdites formules, p représente un nombre entier de 1 à 10, à condition que dans les formules (I) et (II), p ne soit pas égal à 1. Ladite huile lubrifiante satisfait au coefficient de traction à haute température, à l'aptitude à l'écoulement à basse température et à l'indice de viscosité à un niveau élevé.
