ABSTRACT A synthetic hydrocarbon product particularly suitable as a constituent of crankcase lubricant oils for internal combustion engines is made by oligomerizing C12-18 alpha olefins, preferably high in tetradecene, until the reaction mixture, excluding monomer, is pre- dominantly dimers, then distilling off the monomer and hydrogenating. The feed alpha olefin stock is to have an average carbon number of at least 13. Novel hydrocarbons, e.g. 13,14-dimethyl-hexacosane, are constituents of the product. The oligomerization is carried out in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, boron trifluoride, promoted with water being especially preferred.
