A B S T R A C T A process is disclosed for preparing a normally liquid, oil- soluble, metal-free, phosphorus-free substance by reacting a dimer of cyclopentadiene or methylcyclopentadiene with sulfur. The reaction is carried out in the absence of a solvent or in the presence of a non-polar solvent and the amount of sulfur reacted is from 0.1 to 4 moles per mole of said dimer. The sulfurized product is useful as a lubricant additive.
