3D-AM-5112 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electric motor has a rotatable shaft with an exterior end section thereof adapted for driving an apparatus and for subjection to leakage flow from the apparatus of a fluid incompatible with a lubricant of a lubrication system in the electric motor to effect the lubrication of the shaft. An end plate on the electric motor has an opening extending therethrough in readily spaced relation with the shaft and communicating with the lubrication system through which opening the passage of the fluid and the lubricant is prevented by a novel fluid retaining system. The system includes a sleeve disposed at least in part within the opening and arranged about the shaft for conjoint rotation therewith, a first flange integral with the sleeve for interrupting any flow of the lubricant on the shaft and generally therealong toward the opening and for returning the interrupted lubricant to the lubrication system, and a second flange on the sleeve for interrupting the fluid in the event of any leakage thereof generally along the exterior section of the shaft toward the end plate and displacing the interrupted fluid away from the opening. A method of assembling the fluid retaining system is also disclosed.
