ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Paper coating composition contain at least one pigment, at least one binder, and as an insolubilizer for the binder, the product of reacting glyoxal with a polyhydroxyl substituted ester, then with a polyol. The reaction products do not build viscosity as does glyoxal; they do not contain or evolve free formaldehyde; in smaller amounts, they have insolubilizing effects similar to those of the previously known agents; they provide lubrication in addition to insolubilizing the binder; and they provide a high gloss finish to the paper.
