This invention is a process for making lubricating oils of a viscosity index ~ 120 and a pour point of ~ -45°C by (a) oligomerizing an olefinic feedstock in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkyl aluminium halide and an alkyl halide to form a lubricating oil, (b) separating the lubricating oil from the catalyst and (c) optionally catalytically hydrogenating the lubricating oil. The feedstock is a mixture of C7 to C9 1-olefins containing at least 30 % w/w, the mole ratio of the alkyl halide to the alkyl aluminium halide in the oligomerisation catalyst is in the range from 1.0:1 to 20:1, and the oligomerisation reaction is carried out at or below 50°C.
Méthode pour l'obtention d'huiles lubrifiantes possédant un indice de viscosité 120 et un point d'écoulement -45 °C, par a) oligomérisation d'une alimentation oléfinique, en présence d'un catalyseur renfermant un halogénure d'alkylaluminium et un halogénure d'alkyle, pour donner une huile lubrifiante, b) séparation de l'huile lubrifiante du catalyseur, et c) facultativement, hydrogénation catalytique de l'huile lubrifiante. L'alimentation est un mélange à base d'au moins 30 % en poids de 1-oléfines C7 à C9; le rapport molaire halogénure d'alkyle/halogénure d'alkylaluminium dans le catalyseur d'oligomérisation varie de 1.0:1 à 20:1; la réaction d'oligomérisation est effectuée à une température 50 °C.
