A luggage loft assembly and installation method for supporting articles over the searing area of a mass transit vehicle passenger compartment. The assembly includes a rack configured to carry objects for storage and at least two spaced-apart generally parallel inboard stanchions connected at respective lower ends to an inboard side of the rack. At least two spaced-apart generally parallel outboard stanchions are connected at respective inboard ends to an outboard side of the rack. The rack comprises at least two spaced-apart generally parallel support aims and a plurality of. generally parallel spaced-apart rails carried by the support arms. The outboard stanchions have respective outboard ends connectable to a vehicle structure such as a wail. The inboard stanchions have respective upper ends that are connectable to a vehicle ceiling. The rack and stanchions are pre-assembled and positioned in a vehicle as a unit and the stanchions are then connected to an interior of the vehicle.
