An array of rotatable retaining arms for controlling the discharge of lumber from a lumber sorter bin is disclosed. The pivot axis of the retaining arms of the present invention is located so that in their retracted position, the retaining arms are removed entirely from the area between the lumber sorter bin and the lumber outfeed chains, thus enabling the retaining amps to be installed on existing lumber sorter bins without reducing the clearance between the lumber sorter bins and the lumber outfeed chains. Furthermore, a method of actuating the retaining arms by passive means utilizing the weight of the lumber, the vertical movement of the lumber sorter bin floor, and a mechanical rotation means is disclosed.
