A lumber stabilizer for use with a saw trimmer is disclosed. The saw trimmer is of the type comprising a conveyor to longitudinally move lumber pieces across the saw trimmer drop saw assemblies located above the conveyor for selectively trimming the lumber pieces. The lumber stabilizer is for longitudinally guiding and maintaining the lumber pieces while they are trimmed and comprises two elongated rails extending longitudinally on a side of a corresponding drop saw assembly for engaging an upper surface of the lumber pieces at least during the trimming thereof. The stabilizer further comprises a movable gripping element associated with elongated rail. The gripping element has a serrated top planar surface adapted to engage a bottom surface of the lumber pieces during the trimming thereof. Driving means are provided for moving the gripping element along a cyclic course during which at some time the top surface of the gripping element is engaging and driving forward the bottom surface of the lumber pieces.
