ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Paper of improved properties is produced from pulp in which filler is selectively and substantially entirely loaded within the fiber lumens. The paper is produced by vigorously agitating a suspension of pulp and an excess of insoluble filler having an average particle size smaller than the average pore size of the lumen entrances of the pulp fibers until the pulp becomes loaded with filler higher than the level desired in the paper and the lumens become loaded with filler to the level desired in the paper. The filler-containing-pulp is separated from the suspension of residual filler. The filled pulp is vigorously and turbulently washed (e.g., under conditions of shear, preferably with an aqueous solution of filler aid, e.g., alum) until substantially all of the filler on the external surfaces of the fibers is removed. This procedure reduces the loss in strength values in the paper normally associated with filling paper and achieves high filler levels within the lumen. The residual filler which is separated is recovered from the filler-containing pulp on fresh pulp. Retention on the paper machine is increased by the use of such lumen-loaded fibers. The papers have an enhanced combination of strength and optical properties.
