A luminaire having a pattern generator capable of projecting from the luminaire a pattern, such as a directional indicator, to enhance the building occupants' ability to navigate and find exits during an emergency situation, particularly when visual conditions are poor. An exemplary embodiment of a pattern generator includes a light source, a lens, and a pattern forming element. In use, the lens directs the light emitted from the light source toward the pattern forming element, which dictates the pattern projected from the luminaire.
