ABSTRACT A luminance/chrominance separating apparatus for a com- posite video signal has a vertical direction filter for extracting a chrominance component and a luminance component from a composite video signal to produce a first chrominance signal and a first luminance signal. A horizontal direction filter extracts a chrominance component and a luminance component from the composite video signal to produce a second chrominance signal and a second luminance signal. A correlation detector detects a correlation of the composite video signal to produce a gain control signal. The first and second chrominance signals are combined and the first and second luminance signals are combined in accordance with the gain control signal.
