1 PHN.9288 ABSTRACT: Luminescent ternary aluminate with hexagonal crystal structure related to that of magnetoplumbite. The aluminate comprises gadolinium and is activated by at least one of the elements Ph, Sb, Ce, Sn, Tb, Mn, Cr and Dy. On activation by Pb and/or Sh efficient Gd- emission is obtained. On activation by Pb and/or Sb and by Tb, Mn, Cr or Dy the emission of the four last- mentioned elements is obtained. Activation by Ce or Sn furnished the Ce or Sn-emission in the near portion of the UV spectrum. Activation by Ce and/or Sn and by Tb, Mn, Cr and Dy again furnishes the emission of the last- mentioned elements. The aluminates are mainly used in low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamps.
