ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A luminescent terbium-activated borate defined by the formula M3Ln2-xTbx(BO3)4 in which M represents at least one of the alkaline earth metals calcium, strontium and barium and Ln represents at least one of the rare earth metals yttrium, lanthanum, gadolinium, lutetium, ytterbium and dysprosium and in which 0.01 ? x ? 1.50. These luminescent borates may be used in low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamps and in low-pressure cadmium vapour discharge lamps.
