ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Discoveries are disclosed that show particular aspects of recombinant DNA technology can be used suc- cessfully to produce hitherto unknown human lympho- kine/cytokine-like proteins free of other lymphokines or cytokines. These proteins can be produced from DNA seg- ments in cells or cell-free systems in various functional forms. These forms variously enable biochemical and functional studies of these novel proteins as well as production of antibodies. Means are described for deter- mining the level of activation of genes for the lympho- kine/cytokine-like proteins, for example, by measuring mRNA during mitogenic activation of isolated T cells or by measuring antigen secreted in extracellular or body fluids.
