ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing novel lysergic amides of the general formula I Image (I) -wherein x-y stands for -CH=?- or -CH2-?H- group, R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and R1 is a group of the formula IV, V, VI, VII, VIII or IX Image (IV) Image (V) Image (VI) Image (VII) (VIII) Image (IX) wherein n is an integer from 1 to 5, R2 stands for a hydrogen atom or a methyl or trifluoromethyl group, R? stands for a hydrogen or halogen atom, or a methylmercapto or a hydroxy group, R3 stands for an alkyl or an allyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and x1-y1 represents a -CH2-CH2- or a -CH=CH- group with the proviso that if R1 is a group of the formula (V) and R2 stands for a hydrogen atom or trifluoromethyl group, then R? may stand only for a hydroxy or a methylmercapto group and the non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, in which a carboxylic acid of the general formula II Image (II) wherein the x-y and R have the same meaning as above - or a reactive derivative thereof is reacted with an amine of the general formula III R1 - H (III) wherein the meaning of R1 is the same as above - and, where the obtained product is methylated or hydrogenated or both and, where the product can be converted by reacting an acid with a pharmaceutically acceptable anion into an acid addition salt.
