A MACHINE FOR MANUFACTURING ELECTRICAL LIGHT POLES AND TRANSMISSION POLES FROM PLASTIC. ABSTRACT. This invention is a machine and process to manufacture plastic poles of varing lengths and cross-sections, tapered or straight, from virgin or recycled plastic, for use as light standards or transmission poles. A foaming agent may be added to the plastic in order to reduce the amount of plastic being used and the weight of the pole. The plastic is liquified in an extruder machine and is extruded through a cross-head die containing a long tubular nozzle which has been sized to permit a rigid or flexible conduit to be inserted and advanced through it, while the pole is being formed. The plastic is extruded around the nozzle, which is encased in circulating dies containing the outer profile of the pole. The number and length of the dies being circulated determines the length of the pole being made. An equal number of dies containing one part of the outer profile of the pole are circulated in such a manner that they inter-lock around the nozzle of the extruder die and the plastic being extruded. The dies are held together between two platens, one on either side, as they rotate away from the nozzle and are cooled to the desired temperature. Once the pole, being formed, has solidified, the dies are separated, to be circulaled back to the nozzle to start another pole. In this manner, the process is a contineous cycle. The emerging pole can either be left straight or bent, before it cures, to form an arc in one section, such as in a light standard. The poles can be prewired by inserting electrical wires along with the conduit, through the nozzle of the extruded die while the pole is being formed. Colouring agents are added to the plastic to produce a pole of a desired colour.
