A machine arrangement (1) for tamping a track (2) consists of a first and a second machine (4,5) which may be joined together by a separable coupling (6) and each of which has a motive drive (26,43) and a machine frame (8,28) supported on on-track undercarriages (7,29) and a respective vertically adjustable tamping unit (9,32). Associated with the first machine (4), which is of a longer construction, are switch tamping units (9) which are transversely adjustable by means of drives (44) beyond the cross-sectional profile of the machine frame (8), an auxiliary lifting device, vertically and laterally adjustable by means of drives, for gripping a rail of a branch track, the said rail being situated laterally adjacent to the machine (4), and an operator's cab (14) provided immediately preceding or following the tamping units (9). Both the first and the second machine (4,5) have a driver's cab (30) at the end facing away from the common coupling (6).
