The invention relates to a machine element which is formed form steel having a martensite structure and which comprises, at least in a load-free state, compression stresses which are thermochemically produced under at least one section of the surface of the machine element. The value of the compression stresses from the surface to a depth of a maximum 40 ~m corresponds to at least the absolute value of -300 Mpa.
