A machine with a variable profile cutting head to mill out the longitudinal grooves in natural logs for log walls. The flexible cutting head cuts a groove which copies the exterior shape of the log it will fit down against across the entire section of the groove, for the full length. This close fit across the entire joining surfaces is desirable in general and is a necessity where the wall cross section fit is exposed such as the exterior corners or interior openings. Prior art devices have fixed dimension cutting blades which are limited to primarily matching the two edges of joint surfaces. Machines with fixed profile cutting heads also lose accuracy of joint fit with changing log size, surface irregularities and bends. This invention maintains accuracy of fit regardless of the natural log variations, without machine adjustments, and works bent logs by means of a pivot mount and log centering device on the cutting head carrier.
