NHL-SH-03 Canada MACHINE FOR CUTTING DISPOSABLE CONTAINERS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A machine is capable of cutting into small pieces the thin wall material of a plurality of disposable containers such as plas- tic bottles or metal cans. A cutting section includes a pair of parallel shafts mounted for rotation in opposite directions with a plurality of cutting wheels rotatably supported on each of the shafts. Each cutting wheel is securely mounted to be spaced from axially adjacent cutting wheels on the shaft to closely receive one of the cutting wheels on the other shaft therebetween. Each cutting wheel includes a plurality of cutting teeth respectively having a leading surface and a trailing surface which meet at an apex to form a straight edge which is parallel with the shaft. The apex precedes the leading surface during rotation of each cutting wheel. The cutting wheels on one shaft are angularly displaced from adja- cent cutting wheels on the other shaft to cause general alignment of each cutting tooth of a cutting wheel on one shaft to extend be- tween preceding adjacent cutting teeth and following adjacent cut- ting teeth of the adjacent cutting wheels on the other shaft prior to any overlapping of the teeth thereof. The general alignment prior to overlapping causes the thin wall material to be initially bent around the cutting teeth for proper support in order to cause the apex of each cutting tooth to initially produce a transverse cut of the thin wall material by the apex. After the transverse cut, longitudinal cuts toward the forward edge of the thin wall material complete the formation of the small pieces.
