A machine forms adjacent edge portions of adjacent roofing or wall panels into a standing seam securing together the adjacent roofing or wall panels. A first gear wheel is mounted on an output shaft of a motor, second and third gear wheels are mounted in driven engagement with the first gear wheel, fourth and fifth gear wheels are coaxially mounted to the second and third gear wheels, respectively, sixth and seventh gear wheels are mounted in driven engagement with the fourth gear wheel, eighth and ninth gear wheels are mounted in driven engagement with the fifth gear wheel, tenth nd eleventh gear wheels are mounted in driven engagement with the sixth and seventh gear wheels, respectively, and twelfth and thirteenth gear wheels are mounted in driven engagement with the eighth and ninth gear wheels, respectively. The gear wheels are dimensioned such that the sixth to the thirteenth gear wheels, inclusive, operatively rotate at the same speed, with the sixth to the ninth gear wheels, inclusive, all operatively rotating in the same direction and the tenth to the thirteenth gear wheels, inclusive, all operatively rotating in an opposite direction. Seam foaming rolls are mounted one on each of the sixth to the thirteenth gear wheels, inclusive, with the rolls mounted on the sixth and tenth gear wheels constituting a first roll pair, the rolls mounted on the seventh and eleventh gear wheels constituting a second roll pair, the rolls mounted on the eighth and twelve gear wheels constituting a third roll pair, and the rolls mounted on the ninth and thirteenth gear wheels constituting a fourth roll pair. The rolls are so configured that adjacent edge portions of adjacent roofing or wall panels are progressively formed into a standing seam securing together the adjacent roofing or wall panels as these adjacent edge portions of the adjacent roofing or wall panels operatively pass between the rolls of the first roll pair, the rolls of the second roll pair, the rolls of the third roll pair, and the rolls of the fourth roll pair, one roll of each of the roll pairs being rotatable about a fixed axis, and said opposed roll of each roll pair being operatively driven through a universal joint, with said opposed roll being rotatable about an axis which may be pivoted about the universal joint between a closed position in which said opposed roll is in seam forming relationship with said one roll and an open position in which said opposed roll is pivoted away from said one roll for disengagement of the rolls of said roll pair from the seam. A first rod is coupled to said opposed rolls of the roll pairs, with at least one further rod being pivotally mounted at a fixed position on the machine and on the first rod, whereby actuation of the first rod causes simultaneous pivotal movement of the opposed rolls between said open and closed positions. The standing seam comprises the adjacent edge portions of the adjacent roofing or wall panels disposed in face-to-face relationship to constitute a double layer flange, this double layer flange being reflexly bent upon itself to provide two outer portions of the double layer flange being reflexly bent and disposed between the outer portions of the double layer flange.
