ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A machine for making from a thin strip of filtering material a flat, resilient folded structure having on each of its two faces a row of parallel folded ribs having zig-zag ridges and corresponding to a row of grooves on the other face, each rib ridge being connected to each zig-zag line at the bottom of the adjacent groove via a folded flank formed by a succession of facets in the form of parallelograms. The machine has two mark- ing rollers on parallel axes disposed respectively on either side of the path of the strip and driven in synchronism with the object of marking on the two faces of the strip imprints defining the ridges of the ribs and the folds of the folded structure. Each roller has first and second projecting marking lines, the first of which correspond to the rib ridges or groove bottoms and the second corresponding to the folds of the flanks of such ribs or grooves respectively. The first marking lines extend over each of the two marking rollers in annular parallel zig-zag lines centred on the axes of such rollers; the second marking lines extend over each of the rollers from the angular points of the zig-zag lines. A guide passage is bounded laterally by two faces converging downstream and the structure is impelled in the course of folding at constant speed in such passage. The marking is such that the fold- ed ribs extend lengthwise of the strip and the passage is fixed and bounded vertically by two smooth faces which diverge progressively downstream such that the cross-section of the inlet to the passage is substantial complemen- tary to the flattened rectangular section of the undeformed marked strip. The two divergent faces have smooth longitudinal guide ribs whose heights in- crease downstream and whose centre lines converge downstream, extending in accordance with the centre lines of the hollows between the folded ribs to be shaped.
