An optical disc (20) having machine-readable, information-encoding features (22) is provided with a barrier layer secured to the disc. This barrier layer (24) is configured to prevent machine-reading of the features. A reading-inhibit agent (14, 34), included in the disc and activated by removal of the barrier layer, is operative, once activated, to alter the disc to inhibit reading of the disc after some period of time. Alternately, the barrier layer can be eliminated and the reading-inhibit agent can be activated by initial reading of the disc, as for example by exposure to optical radiation associated with reading of the disc, or rotation of the disc.

Un disque optique (20) comportant des caractéristiques (42) de codage d'informations exploitables par machine est doté d'une couche formant barrière fixée au disque. La couche formant barrière (24) est configurée pour empêcher l'exploitation par machine des caractéristiques. Un agent (14, 34) empêchant la lecture, inclus dans le disque et activé par retrait de la couche formant barrière est fonctionnel, une fois activé, pour modifier le disque afin d'empêcher l'exploitation de ce dernier après une certaine durée. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, on peut éliminer la couche formant barrière et activer l'agent empêchant l'exploitation par une lecture initiale du disque, tel que, par exemple, par exposition à un rayonnement optique associé à l'exploitation du disque ou à sa rotation.
