MACHINE TIMING SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved timing system for an indexing type of article inspection machine. Inspection machines which index articles through a plurality of inspection stations require a timing signal to turn various machine functions on and off. A shaft encoder generates a plurality of pulses for each machine cycle. A single pulse is also generated to signal the beginning or end of a machine cycle. The multiple pulses are counted, stored, and a number representative of the total stored count is presented as an output signal quantity. A series of logic circuits turn the machine functions on and off in response to the output signal quantity reaching specific, pre-selected values. These values may be calibrated as a percentage of the total cycle time for each machine cycle.
