The machine tool collet (10) has a plurality of gripping jaws (12) held in a longitudinal and angularly spaced relation about a longitudinal centerline axis (14) through the collet (10). The gripping jaws (12) have an inner face (16) parallel to the centerline axis (14) and the plurality of jaws (12) define an inner diameter opening (18) through the collet (10) for receiving a tool shank (20). Resilient material (28) is disposed between the gripping jaws (12) for holding the plurality of jaws (12) in the desired spaced relation. The radially inward directed stop (30) is defined within the opening (18) of the collet (10). The stop (30) is disposed so as to contact the rear face (22) of a tool shank (20) inserted into the collet (10) thereby preventing rearward axial movement of the tool shank (20) within the collet (10).
