ABSTRACT The tools have a surface coating comprising at least one compound of at least one main group element of Group VI of the periodic table, on the one hand, and at least one subgroup element of Groups V and VI of the periodic table, on the other hand. The coating consists of molybdenum dis- ulfide, for example. It has been found that such tools are superior to conventional hard-solid covered tools in various respects. The tools, such as milling cutters, for example, have an excellent edge life, even more than six times as long. Moreover, the machined surfaces have substantially less surface roughness. Furthermore, the tools make it pos- sible to work with clearly higher feeds.
