Especially for use in the capture of a solute in solution, a macrocyclic compound has the formula (I) wherein X is a ring bearing an optionally- protected functional group or solid phase group R1, Y is a linker optionally bearing an optionally-protected functional group or solid phase group R2, m is at least 3, and each instance of X, Y, R1 and R2 may be the same or different.
