Compound of the general formula: (1) (wherein R1 is hydrogen or C2-C4 alkanoyl; and R2 is any of the groups represented by the formulae: (A) to (G) (wherein R3 is C1-C4 alkyl)) is capable of inhibiting macrophage activation. Therefore, the macrophage activation inhibitor comprising a compound of the general formula (1) or a pharmacologically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient is useful as a medical agent for prevention, amelioration and treatment of diseases attributed to infection with pathogens such as bacterial and viruses.
