ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An adsorbent comprising magnesia particles prepared by calcining at a temperature range of 500 to 700°C magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate or basic magnesium carbonate, and at least one metal oxide selected from the group consisting of kaolin, ferric oxide, calcium oxide and alumina, the metal oxide being mixed with the magnesia particles in an amount within a range of 5 to 40% by weight based on the total weight of the magnesia particles and the metal oxide. The magnesia adsorbent thus obtained has remarkably higher adsorption pro- perties as compared with conventional magnesia adsorbents and, after adsorption treatment, the adsorption properties are easily covered by calcining at the temperature mentioned above.
